Lock nuts are manufactured in various sizes. Depending on their application, these nuts are also called shaft nuts or withdrawal nuts. They are used to secure bearings or other components to a shaft, to assist in mounting bearings on tapered shafts, and to remove bearings from withdrawal sleeves. Lock nuts are locked onto the shaft in five different ways, as described below.
Lock nuts up to and including HM 3160 and HM 3064 are made of Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron. Larger nuts are made of steel protected with a non-solvent anti-corrosion coating. Lock washers and clips are made of Deep Drawn Steel Strip.
There are various standards for the production and use of lock nuts, such as ASTM, DIN, or ISO. One of the most widely used standards is DIN 7967. These nuts are used to secure bearings or other components on a shaft, to help install bearings on tapered shafts, and to remove bearings from a withdrawable sleeve. Lock nuts are locked onto the shaft in five different ways.
